As the United States Sports Academy continues to move forward with our integration with Campus Café, we want to make you aware of the new free email address provider that we will be using, Microsoft 365. We will be providing you with more details soon concerning the change and what this means for you. Below you will find some information about 365 that you may or may not know. 365 is a personal information manager software system from Microsoft, available as a part of the Microsoft Office suite. Though primarily an email client, 365 also includes such functions as calendaring, task managing, contact managing, note-taking, journal logging and web browsing. In Memoriam: USSA Alumnus Barry Haley

The United States Sports Academy is mourning the loss of alumnus Barry Haley, who passed away after a brief illness on October 29, 2022, at age 67. Barry Haley Haley was a highly regarded athletics administrator and was recognized as the 2017-2018 Athletic Director of the Year by the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association. He worked more than 40 years in school sports programs and had served as the athletic director at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School in Concord, Mass., since 2006. Haley earned his Master of Sports Science degree in sports management in 1988, while he worked as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher at Malden (Mass.) Catholic High School. US Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team Records Best-Ever Finish at Worlds Under Walker’s Leadership

When the U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team completed its best-ever finish at the World ParaVolley Championships in Sarajevo in November, the team did so under the leadership of United States Sports Academy alumnus Greg Walker. Walker was the Academy’s 2021 Alumnus of the Year because of his decade of experience coaching volleyball at the Paralympic and collegiate levels. In addition to his coaching duties with Team USA, Walker is also the head coach of the Smith College women’s volleyball team in Northampton, Mass. A native of Huntingdon, Pa., Walker has been active with the U.S. Men’s Sitting Volleyball Team since 2013 and has served as head coach since 2016. Improvements to Academy technology infrastructure are underway

Greetings all Students, Faculty, and Staff, Soon you will be learning more about changes to the technology used at the United States Sports Academy. The Academy will be implementing a new student information system and a new multifactor authentication system. These two systems will provide more information to you about your program and protect your student data. In addition, we will be moving to Microsoft Office 365 for document sharing and storage and all students, faculty, and staff will be provided free accounts as we will be moving away from the use of Google docs. USSA Welcomes Vincent Butta and Randy Smith to Board of Trustees

The United States Sports Academy is proud to welcome Randy W. Smith and Vincent Butta to its esteemed Board of Trustees. The Academy is governed by its Board of Trustees, consisting of a group of diverse professionals with specific expertise important to the formation of such an organization. Smith is a former Vice President and Senior Consultant who began his career with Merrill in 1 983. Randy obtained his BS degree from Auburn University in 1977. Randy and his team assisted clients in comprehensive wealth management, developing strategies and long-term plans for the creation and growth of wealth, protection and preservation of wealth and tax minimization strategies, seeking to plan tax advantaged distributions of wealth during life, and planning wealth distribution after death. Aaron Judge, Iga Swiatek Named Academy September Athletes of the Month

American baseball player Aaron Judge and Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek were named the United States Sports Academy’s Athletes of the Month after their impressive performances on the world stage in September. Judge earned American League player of the month honors after hitting .417/.565/.869 with 10 home runs, eight doubles, 17 RBIs and 30 walks in 25 games in the month. He hit his 61st home run of the season on 28 September 2022, tying Roger Maris’ single-season AL record from 1961. Swiatek won the women’s U.S. Open championship, defeating Ons Jabur 6-2, 7-6 on 11 September 2022 in New York. Student of the Month Hassan Dakroub Inspired by USSA Alum Mike Leach

Like many United States Sports Academy students, Hassan Dakroub is currently working in the sports profession and hopes to use his degree to take the next step in his career. Dakroub, who is seeking his Bachelor of Sports Science degree in sports coaching, is currently working as an assistant football coach at Fordson High School in Dearborn, Mich. He hopes to use what he learns from the Academy to move up in the ranks among football coaches. Former USSA Teaching Assistant Dr. Jimmy Mattern Named Faculty Athletic Representative at Wilmington College

Former United States Sports Academy teaching assistant and alumnus Dr. Jimmy Mattern was recently named the faculty athletic representative at Wilmington College in Ohio. Mattern is an assistant professor of sport management and the area coordinator for sport sciences at Wilmington. He completed his Doctor of Education degree while working on campus at the Academy in Daphne, Ala., in 2014. Mattern completed his Academy doctoral degree in 2018 at age 27, making him one of the youngest people ever to complete the institution’s doctoral program. Academy Alumnus Dr. David Peterson Leads Development of Shoulder Safe Barbell

After months of research and trial and error, United States Sports Academy alumnus Dr. David Peterson created more than just a student-lead research project, but a tangible product that will benefit athletes both at Cedarville and elsewhere. Peterson, an assistant professor of kinesiology at Cedarville University in Ohio, and 2022 Cedarville alumna Kaitlyn Tyms collaborated on a research project to determine the ideal grip width for a revolutionary new barbell designed for athletes with shoulder-related injuries. The barbell is now available for use in Cedarville University’s athletic center and for purchase online. In Memoriam: Dr. Stan Drawdy

Dr. Stan Drawdy The United States Sports Academy is mourning the loss of Dr. Stan Drawdy, who served the institution as a member of its distance learning faculty for two decades. Drawdy, 68, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 after a brief illness. Drawdy was well respected by his peers and loved by his students, as evidenced by this comment from one of his students in their course exit survey. “The best course I had at the Academy was Coaching American football because Dr. Stanley Drawdy was a wonderful instructor and football is a sport I was eager to learn more about.” In addition to his service to the Academy as a distance learning faculty member, Drawdy also taught abroad for the institution.
