The 2008 Alumna of the Year, Lynn Wheeler, was honored by the University of Texas (UT) crew team on Saturday, 15 February 2014, when the team named their newest boat after her.
After Title IX was made law in 1972, prohibiting discrimination based on a person’s gender, Wheeler worked hard to have it rapidly implemented at the University. Wheeler served as the former Associate Athletic Director at the Division I University for 26 years, where she is credited with launching the crew team, along with many other female sports still in existence at the University.
In 2012, the same year that Wheeler retired from her position as Associate Athletic Director, the UT crew team landed in first place at the Big 12 Conference Rowing Championship for the fourth time in a row.
The UT rowing team has a long tradition of naming their boats after inspirational Texas women including the former Governor of Texas, Ann Richards.
Wheeler earned her bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York College at Cortland. Wheeler is a graduate of Washington State University where she received her Master’s in Education in 1974. Wheeler received a second Master’s degree in Sports Management from the Academy In 1996.
