DAPHNE, Ala. – The United States Sports Academy has announced its Athlete of the Month ballot for October. Following the selection committee’s meeting, a total of 12 candidates – six male, six female – from eight different countries comprise the list. The original pool of those nominated was 35 before getting pared down by a vote from a panel of the Academy’s faculty and staff.
One male and one female will be chosen the winners as decided by the public. Everyone is encouraged to cast their vote today on the Academy’s website and have their friends do the same. The full ballot is listed along with bios of what each athlete accomplished during the month of October. Voting will continue until next week, November 13, 2015.
Female candidates are: Daniela Ryf, Ironman, Switzerland; Florence Kiplagat, Marathon, Kenya; Sylvia Fowles, WNBA, United States; Emma Pallant, Duathlon, United Kingdom; Federica Brignone, Alpine Skiing, Italy; and Simone Biles, Gymnastics, United States.
Male candidates are: Jake Arrieta, Baseball, United States; Dickson Chumba, Marathon, Kenya; Jan Frodeno, Ironman, Germany; Gennady Golovkin, Boxing, Kazakhstan; Daniel Murphy, Baseball, United States; and Alex Ovechkin, Ice Hockey, Russia.
