The International Sports Academy (ISA) in Singapore and Outram Secondary School signed a three-year agreement allowing selected students to enroll in a year-long sports coaching methodology certificate program awarded by the United States Sports Academy.

Under the agreement, 28 Outram students will initially be registered by the ISA to receive sports education in subjects such as sports psychology, sports medicine and athlete management. Those who complete the program can then enroll in one of ISA’s sports diploma programs.

ISA President Chay Yee says his academy plans to make similar arrangements with other government schools in Singapore. He sees secondary school programs, like the one with Outram, as one of the fastest ways of increasing student enrollment for the Academy.

“We will continue to work very hard to keep the United States Sports Academy flag flying, and flying high, too,” he says.

Academy President and CEO Dr. Thomas P. Rosandich says the agreement could be used in other countries, as well.

“This is significant and, hopefully, it might cause other countries to think about developing a program with the same concept,” Dr. Rosandich says. “I would hope that places like Brunei and Vietnam might be drawn to ISA’s program in Singapore. I congratulate Chay Yee and the ISA on its persistence to develop this educational program.”

There are four phases under this sports education program, which comprises both theoretical and practical elements. Students will get to apply the new skills they learn in a community involvement project by assisting primary school sports coaches. Graduates will receive a United States Sports Academy certificate in sports coaching methodology and then gain direct admission, with an exemption of one module, into an ISA sports diploma program.

Outram Secondary School is supportive of sports as a viable career option. It was also attracted by the sports education program’s character development lessons in areas, such as respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership and sportsmanship.

Outram Vice Principal Sukhdev Singh says that sports is an important vehicle in the development of character and leadership skills.

“Thus, I am confident that this additional pathway would not only add value to the students’ knowledge, but also their character in their growing years,” he is quoted as saying in a Singapore newspaper.
