Nancy Raia, the community outreach director for the Eastern Shore Art Center, has been named Chairperson of the United States Sports Academy’s Art Committee.
The Art Committee evaluates artwork and portfolios for the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA) Sport Artist of the Year Award, which the Academy has awarded to artists from around the world since 1984.
Before her current position with the Eastern Shore Arts Center, Raia served as the ABC project director from 2001 to 2008. She has developed a number of art projects, including the “Hurricane Healing Series,” which started in 2004 to help children affected by hurricanes Ivan and Katrina. Another project is “Art Without Limits,” which is a current project for people with disabilities. In 2009, Raia was named a Woman of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of America’s Alabama Chapter.
ASAMA is located on the Academy campus, and is dedicated to the preservation of sports history, art and literature. Founded in 1984, ASAMA recognizes the importance of the cultural connectivity of athletic competition and artistic expression.
