The first phase of the Iron Bowl monument honoring the Alabama-Auburn football rivalry will be unveiled on the United States Sports Academy campus at 4 p.m. Friday, 22 January 2010. Green artist Bruce Larsen, the 2009 Sport Artist of the Year for Sculpture, designed the monument. When completed, the Iron Bowl monument could eventually become the largest tribute to American football in the country.

Alabama and Auburn first played each other in 1893. It was named the Iron Bowl as a nod to the city of Birmingham, which has a rich background as a center for iron and steel production, and hosted the game for many years. The game has since moved to the schools’ home stadiums, but the Iron Bowl continues to resonate as the best rivalry in college football.
