United States Sports Academy alumnus Derrick Mitchell has been named the new head men’s basketball coach at Voorhees College, a school located in Denmark, SC.

Voorhees is A NAIA program competing out of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Prior to joining Voorhees, Mitchell served as assistant coach of the women’s basketball team at NCAA Division II Southern Arkansas University.

Before his appointment at SAU, Mitchell was the head coach at R.B. Hudson Middle School in Selma, Ala. He also previously served as an assistant coach at Wallace Community College in Selma, Ala. In that role, he served as recruiting coordinator and worked specifically with guards. Mitchell earned a master’s degree in coaching and sports studies from the United States Sports Academy in 2009. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Tougaloo College in 2002.
