The United States Sports Academy is mourning the loss of alumnus Barry Haley, who passed away after a brief illness on October 29, 2022, at age 67.

Barry Haley

Haley was a highly regarded athletics administrator and was recognized as the 2017-2018 Athletic Director of the Year by the Massachusetts Secondary Schools Athletic Directors Association. He worked more than 40 years in school sports programs and had served as the athletic director at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School in Concord, Mass., since 2006. Haley earned his Master of Sports Science degree in sports management in 1988, while he worked as an athletic trainer and physical education teacher at Malden (Mass.) Catholic High School.

Haley spent more than 40 years in education, serving as an athletic director for several Massachusetts high schools, including Malden Catholic, Bedford, Wakefield, and most recently Concord-Carlisle, before retiring in the spring of 2018. He was passionate about working with students and the positive impact high school athletics have on the development of young people. He extolled the virtues of sportsmanship, ethics, and integrity and led by example in all facets of his life.

Haley was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time on the course with friends as a member of Thompson Country Club, Renaissance Golf Club and Treviso Bay in Naples, Florida. He was rarely seen indoors or stationary after his retirement and could usually be found golfing, playing tennis, or riding his bike. He started every day with a cup of Taster’s Choice instant coffee and ended most with a scoop of Brigham’s chocolate chip ice cream with sprinkles. He lived a full life with no regrets and will be greatly missed.
