Academy Receives Complete Set of Rio 2016 Olympic Games Posters for Display at Museum

Pipas e Sonhos by Kobra The United States Sports Academy is continuing a longstanding tradition of collecting and displaying official Olympic posters by adding a full set of official Rio 2016 Olympic Games posters to the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA) public sports art collection. The Rio 2016 poster collection, which includes all 15 official posters from the Games, will be displayed on campus as part of the Academy’s public sports art collection at ASAMA. The collection includes 13 official posters, as well as posters featuring the logos for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Potter Teaching Academy Course to Soccer Administrators in United Arab Emirates

Dr. Jeff Potter An experienced coach, athletic administrator and teacher, Dr. Jeff Potter is currently teaching a two-week course on sports facilities and events management for the United States Sports Academy at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Football Association Academy in Dubai under a cooperative program to enhance the training of football (soccer) administrators in the UAE. “This is a very energetic group of students and they are educating me, in addition to me teaching them,” said Potter, who lives in Shawnee, Okla. “I hope the students are getting as much out of this course as I am. Rosandich, Founding President of the United States Sports Academy and a long-time leader in sport and sport education around the globe, has been named to the International Sports Hall of Fame (ISHOF). Blount High School Students Visit United States Sports Academy

A group of students from Mattie T. Blount High School in Mobile, Ala., recently visited the United States Sports Academy’s campus in Daphne, Ala. The students toured the American Sport Art Museum and Archives (ASAMA) and participated in a discussion with Academy faculty members including Dr. Stephen Butler, dean of academic affairs; Dr. Fred Cromartie, director of doctoral studies; Dr. Brandon Spradley, program director of sports management; Dr. Bret Simmermacher, chair of sports coaching; and Sandra Geringer, acting director of sports studies. Mulherin Home Residents Visit United States Sports Academy

Residents from the Mulherin Home in Mobile, Ala., recently toured the United States Sports Academy and the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA) in Daphne, Ala. The Mulherin Home provides a home for individuals with developmental disabilities in a loving, family environment. Founded in 1984, ASAMA is dedicated to the preservation of sports art, history, and literature. The ASAMA collection is composed of nearly 2,000 works of sport art across a variety of media, including paintings, sculptures, assemblages, prints and photographs. The museum is open free to the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. For more information, go to www.asama.org.

Academy Alumnus and Faculty Member Shares Super Bowl Experience with Mentorship Student

A United States Sports Academy faculty member recently was able to contribute to the success of Super Bowl LI, and at the same time provide some memorable “hands-on” learning to an Academy doctoral student. For the twelfth consecutive year, Academy alumnus and non-resident faculty member Dr. Dexter Davis attended the Super Bowl and volunteered to help run the NFL Experience, a fan favorite event featuring professional football’s interactive theme park, games, youth football clinics, merchandise and player autograph sessions. In Memoriam: Academy Mourns the Loss of Student Thad Akins

Photo: Spanish Fort High School The United States Sports Academy mourns the loss of doctoral student Thad Akins, who was pursuing his Doctor of Education degree in sports management at the Academy.  Akins passed away in a tragic automobile accident on 19 January 2017 at age 43. Akins was a teacher and head girls’ basketball coach at Spanish Fort High School in Spanish Fort, Ala. Akins also served as an assistant coach on the school’s baseball and freshman football teams. A You Caring online donation account has been set up in Akins’ memory. Proceeds from the account will support Akins’ two special needs children, who will face many challenges ahead. Akins’ son, Wilson Cole, lives with autism and his daughter, Avery Catherine, lives with Rett Syndrome. [...]
