Faculty member Robert Herron recently presented at the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy Summit in Birmingham, Ala.

Herron, the Academy’s acting director of sports exercise science, presented on long-term athletic development in youth at the summit. Co-presenters were Academy chair of sports management Dr. Brandon Spradley, chair of sports coaching Dr. Roch King and National Faculty member Dr. Greg Ryan.

Herron also represented the Academy at the Southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting in Greenville, S.C. Herron was a co-presenter as Academy master’s degree student Christopher Bonilla presented data from his master’s thesis investigating different warmup protocols on performance in the new Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT). Additionally, Herron presented content on innovative ways to assess subjective readiness and exertion in tactical athletes as well as a poster exploring the relationship between fitness measures and in-game performance analytics.

Herron is the Academy’s acting director of sports exercise science and is currently pursuing his Doctor of Education degree in sports management. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Auburn University at Montgomery and a master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Alabama. Additionally, he is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® with distinction from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CSCS*D) and a clinical exercise physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM-CEP). Herron has extensive experience in higher education teaching and applied research.

A resident of Arlington, Va., Bonilla was the Academy’s January 2022 Student of the Month. Bonilla works as an online personal trainer and is also interested in the academic side of exercise science.
