Academy and Republic of Guinea Sign Agreement for Sport Development in West African Nation

With the President of Guinea H.E. Dr. Alpha Condé looking on, Guinea Foreign Minister H.E. Mamadi Touré, left, and United States Sports Academy President Dr. T.J. Rosandich signed a Protocol of Cooperation to aid in sports development in the west African nation. The United States Sports Academy will work with the west African nation of Guinea to help strengthen the national sports effort there after the two signed a Protocol for Cooperation during a recent meeting. Dr. Alpha Condé is leading a delegation to the United States from that country ahead of the upcoming meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, which will open on Tuesday, 17 September 2019 in New York. Academy Announces Inaugural Dissertation Writing Intensive Workshop for Doctoral Students

Completing a doctoral dissertation can be a daunting task for even the most accomplished students. The United States Sports Academy is committed to student success in all aspects of their graduate work, with a focus on academic and professional skill building, intellectual engagement, and an understanding of the graduate school experience. Because of its commitment to student success, the Academy is offering its doctoral candidates the inaugural Dissertation Writing Intensive Workshop, hosted by the Robert Block Library on 13-15 November, 2019, on the institution’s campus in Daphne, Ala. Vote Now for United States Sports Academy Athlete of the Month for August

The United States Sports Academy has announced its Athlete of the Month ballot for August and public voting is in progress. Following the selection committee’s meeting, 12 candidates from seven countries comprise the list. Everyone is encouraged to cast a vote on the Academy’s website at www.ussa.edu. Voting will continue until 5 p.m. Central time on Thursday, 12 September 2019. Male nominees are Aristides Aquino, baseball, Dominican Republic; Jordan Burroughs, wrestling, United States; Noah Lyles, track and field, United States; Rory McIlroy, golf, Northern Ireland; Anderson Peters, track and field, Grenada; and Teemu Pukki, football (soccer), Finland. Eisenhower Memorial in Washington D.C. to Feature Sculptures by Academy 2004 Sport Artist of the Year Sergey Eylanbekov

The masterworks of sculptor Sergey Eylanbekov for the Gen. Dwight David Eisenhower Memorial are another step closer to completion with the announcement of the official dedication ceremony to be held on 8 May 2020 – the 75th anniversary of VE Day – on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Architect Frank Gehry’s design for the Eisenhower Memorial was developed in collaboration with a creative team of artists and engineers.   The Eisenhower Memorial Commission, created by Congress, is overseeing creation of the project. Eylanbekov, the United States Sports Academy’s 2004 Sport Artist of the Year, was selected to design the sculptures that will commemorate Eisenhower as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in World War II and as 34th President of the United States. Academy Signs Protocol for Cooperation with Brazilian Sports Company

The United States Sports Academy recently welcomed to campus a pair of Brazilian entrepreneurs for discussions on how the institution can aid in the growth of sport in Latin America. Sylvio Maia and Werner Fomin, the owners of Winner’s Sports Entertainment, were on campus to sign a protocol for cooperation with the Academy in an effort to boost the development of sports professionals in Brazil. Academy Mourns Loss of Longtime Trustee, Education Leader Dr. Milly Cowles

Dr. Milly Cowles The United States Sports Academy is mourning the loss of former trustee Dr. Milly Cowles, a longtime leader in education and one of the founders of Head Start programs in the United States. Cowles, born in Ramer, Ala., in 1932, passed away on 7 August 2019. She served on the Academy’s Board of Trustees between 2003 and 2016. Cowles graduated from Troy University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and taught for seven years in Montgomery public schools. After receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Alabama in 1962, she began a long career as a professor at Rutgers University, The University of Georgia, The University of South Carolina, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she was the first woman Dean [...]

Academy Receives Isaiah J. Whitley MCTS Legacy of Excellence Awards

The United States Sports Academy was recognized for its rich history of partnership with the Mobile County Training School (MCTS) at the Legacy Luncheon at the Robert Hope Community Center in Plateau, Ala. Academy President Dr. T.J. Rosandich and Chair of Sports Management Dr. Brandon Spradley accepted Isaiah J. Whitley MCTS Legacy of Excellence awards from MCTS Alumni Association President Anderson Flen. The award is named in recognition of the former MCTS principal Isaiah J. Whitley, whose efforts led to the school’s ability to secure monetary aid from the state of Alabama. Whitley served as the principal there from 1910 until his death in 1923. Djokovic, Halep Named United States Sports Academy July Athletes of the Month

After winning the prestigious Wimbledon tennis championship in London, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic and Romania’s Simona Halep have been named the United States Sports Academy’s male and female Athletes of the Month for July. Djokovic won his fifth career Wimbledon title in an epic 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 13-12 (7-3) battle against longtime rival Roger Federer of Switzerland. It was the first time a tiebreaker round was used to determine the Wimbledon winner. Djokovic has won 16 Grand Slam titles. American Sport Art Museum & Archives Receives Unique Collection of Tennis Magazines and Books

Academy Library Director Dr. Vandy Pacetti-Donelson inspects the tennis magazine collection that was recently donated to the American Sport Art Museum & Archives. The owners of an antique store in Ohio recently donated a unique collection of tennis magazines and books to the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA) on the campus of the United States Sports Academy. Priscilla and Greg Wilt of Sidney, Ohio, donated the collection of tennis magazines dating from 1974 through 2018 to ASAMA. The collection is not sequential, but instead the pieces follow the athletic careers of tennis stars through years of magazine feature photos and articles. Some of the all-time tennis greats are featured, including Andre Agassi, Bjorn Borg, Steffi Graf, Venus Williams, Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and others. The [...]

Student Work Judged by Academy Art Committee and Sport Artist of the Year Steven Lester

After being inspired by the renowned sport art collection at the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA) on the campus of the United States Sports Academy, a handful of students from the Mobile, Ala., area created some award winning sport art of their own. The students – from the Rotary Youth Club, St. Paul’s Academy, and the National Charity League – created art inspired by their recent ASAMA visit. The art was displayed at the Eastern Shore Art Center (ESAC) in Fairhope at First Friday Art Walk to be judged by members of the Academy’s prestigious Art Committee.
