Northern Ireland golf professional, Rory McIlroy and Czech Republic professional tennis standout, Petra Kvitova were chosen as the United States Sports Academy’s July 2014 Athletes of the Month.

Kvitova defeated Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-0 to win her second Wimbledon women’s title in the singles division on July 5th in London, England.  Kvitova captured her first Wimbledon title in 2011.

In the men’s division, McIlroy won the 2014 Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course in Merseyside, England on July 20th. He shot a 1-under 71 in the final round of the tournament to win by two strokes. His total for the tournament was 17-under 271. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.  McIlroy has won three straight tournaments, including the PGA Championship on Sunday.

Finishing second in the female division was professional golfer Mo Martin. Martin finished 1-under 287 to win the 2014 women’s British Open Championship on July 13 at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. She was the only player to finish the tournament under par.

The runner-up to McIlroy in the male division is professional tennis player Novak Djokovic, who defeated Roger Federer 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 to win the 2014 Wimbledon singles title in London, England on July 6. The win was his second Wimbledon title and seventh grand slam title. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.

Third place July recipients are the professional track and field athlete, Sandra Perkovic in the female category and soccer star, Lionel Messi in the men’s category.

Perkovic won the women’s discus title and set a meet record at the Diamond League meet on July 5 in Paris, France. Her winning throw was 211 feet 6.5 inches.

Messi was selected as the 2014 FIFA World Cup Most Outstanding Player by winning the Golden Ball. The forward led Argentina to the World Cup title match before falling to Germany 1-0 on July 13. He finished the World Cup competition with four goals in seven matches.

Kvitova and McIlroy are now eligible for the Academy’s male and female 2014 Athlete of the Year Award. For the 30th consecutive year, the Academy will oversee the worldwide online voting that will take place in December. This prestigious award is currently done in conjunction with NBC Sports.

The public is invited to participate in the worldwide Athlete of the Month nomination and ballot voting processes.
