The United States Sports Academy’s student of the Month Daniel Kane said he’s looking forward to earning his doctoral degree and using it to progress through the ranks of the teaching profession in higher education.
Kane is a faculty member in the department of tourism and hospitality at Kingsborough Community College, part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system in Brooklyn. Kane, an Academy Doctor of Education degree student, discovered the institution on the recommendation of alumnus and national faculty member Dr. Anthony Borgese, who is the chair of Kane’s department at Kingsborough.
“I found out about the Academy from Dr. Borgese when I taught an introduction to sports management course with him,” Kane said. “I couldn’t be happier with the result. The Academy is the best program I have ever been part of. The entire faculty, Dr. Fred Cromartie, Dr. Brandon Spradley, Dr. Borgese, and Dr. (Bonnie) Tiell have been wonderful and willing to help at every step of the way.
“I am a huge fan of the Academy and I recommend it to my students all the time. The Academy offers a fantastic program and I am glad it is here to help people earn their degrees and give themselves a better life.”
Kane is currently in the final phase of his dissertation process and hopes to be finished with the doctoral program by this coming summer. After graduating, Kane said he’ll be able to use the degree to earn an assistant professor position at Kingsborough.
“Because I’m currently in the Academy’s doctoral program, I’ve been able to work as faculty at Kingsborough,” Kane said. “The doctoral degree will allow me to move up in the ranks to assistant professor. I can’t thank the Academy enough for what it has done for me.”
Kane’s dissertation studies how sports video games may boost interest in sport for players who may not otherwise know about them, he said.
“I’m interested in seeing whether or not sports video games can be used to teach about the games themselves,” Kane said. “Can a soccer video game, for instance, be used to help teach gamers about the rules of soccer, then in turn get them interested in sport? I’m interested in looking at ways we can connect eSports to the world of on-field sports.”
