Baker High School’s Helen Hendrix was crowned the Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2023-24 school year at a banquet on the campus of the United States Sports Academy (USSA) in Daphne on April 22, 2024.

Hendrix is a senior at Baker, she is captain of both the cross country and track and field teams. She has a 4.79 GPA, scored a 32 on the ACT and is ranked among the top 10 students in her graduating class. In addition to those accolades, Hendrix is also a member National Honor Society, Key Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Baker Ambassadors, Mu Alpha Theta, HOSA – Future Health Professionals, and a Crittenton Youth Ambassador. Hendrix plans to attend the University of South Alabama, where she will be part of the Honors College and earned early acceptance into medical school.

“My dream is to be a doctor, so I’m excited to be able to achieve my goal,” Hendrix said. “My mom has been my biggest supporter. She’s been there every step of the way, encouraging me to keep going to achieve my goals. I would not be who I am without her.”

“We are proud to celebrate Helen’s dedication to her sport on the track and also her perseverance in the classroom and community,” USSA president Dr. Steven Condon said. “We are proud to recognize Helen’s accomplishments, and thrilled that she is such a good representative of her school, Baker High School. She exemplifies the meaning of the phrase ‘scholar athlete’ and we’re just so excited to be able to reward her hard work.”

The Scholar Athlete of the Week program is sponsored by USSA and airs each week on WKRG News 5 in Mobile, Ala. News 5 sports director and anchor Simone Eli emceed the event, and the Scholar Athlete of the Year award announcement aired live during the 6 p.m. newscast.
