Student of the Month Dr. Steve Wachs is a Teacher, Podcaster, Sport Psychologist and Social Media Researcher

Dr. Steve Wachs is already an accomplished teacher, podcaster, sports psychologist, and researcher, but now that he has a doctoral degree from the United States Sports Academy, the institution’s latest Student of the Month hopes to expand his reach with more speaking engagement and presentation opportunities. Wachs recently successfully defended his dissertation, which researched the impact of social media on young athletes. For the mentorship portion of his Academy doctoral program, Wachs started a podcast that revolves around basketball in the Southern California area and includes discussions of sport psychology, coaching, and parenting. Vote Now for Athlete of the Month for April

Athletes representing seven different sports make up the United States Sports Academy’s April Athlete of the Month ballot, which is online now for voting at the Academy’s website, www.ussa.edu. Voting will continue until 5 p.m. Central time on Thursday, 12 April 2022. Male nominees are Ochai Agbaji, basketball, United States; Evans Chebet, athletics, Kenya; Caeleb Dressel, swimming, United States; Paul Juda, gymnastics, United States; Scottie Scheffler, golf, United States; and Seiya Suzuki, baseball, Japan. Sport Corruption Fighter Richard McLaren Receives Honorary Doctorate from USSA

International sports corruption fighter and renowned doping investigator Richard McLaren received an Honorary Doctorate from the United States Sports Academy at the institution’s recent Founder’s Day event in April. Each year as part of its Awards of Sport program, the Academy presents its Honorary Doctorate to a person who has made outstanding contributions to sport and to society. Academy President and CEO Dr. T.J. Rosandich and Board of Trustees Chairman Bob Campbell presented the award to McLaren during the institution’s commencement ceremony in Daphne, Ala., on 22 April 2022. Academy Celebrates Founder’s Day and 50th Anniversary with Symposia, Commencement

The United States Sports Academy threw a party 50 years in the making as it hosted its first ever Founder’s Day celebration April 21-22. The two-day event culminated with a commencement ceremony for students who traveled from all parts of the country to attend. On Thursday, 21 April, the Academy hosted an Open House event followed by an alumni outing at a Minor League Baseball game in Pensacola, Fla. Academy graduates, resident faculty, non-resident faculty, staff, Trustees, and the Academy’s mascot Sammy Eagle attended the game between the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and the Montgomery Biscuits. Academy Trustee and Artist Susan McCollough Unveils Nick Saban Bust at Founder’s Day

As part of its 50th Anniversary Founder’s Day celebration, the United States Sports Academy welcomed into the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA) another original sculpture created by someone very close to the institution. Trustee and Art Committee member Susan N. McCollough unveiled an original bronze bust of University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban during the Founder’s Day program. The bust is now on permanent display in the ASAMA collection. Susan Nomberg McCollough is an internationally-acclaimed abstract and impressionistic artist who has produced hundreds of paintings, many of which have won national and international awards. Spanish Soccer Star Fernando Torres Teaches Core Values in New Course Available from the United States Sports Academy

Spanish soccer star Fernando Torres is famous for his more than two decades of work as a player and a manager at the highest levels of international competition. Now, Torres is lending his talents to the public through a continuing education course offered by the United States Sports Academy. Japanese Figure Skaters Shoma Uno, Kaori Sakamoto Named Academy March Athletes of the Month

Japanese figure skating champions Shoma Uno and Kaori Sakamoto earned the United States Sports Academy’s Athlete of the Month honors after their impressive performances capturing the men’s and women’s singles titles at the World Figure Skating Championships in March. Uno won his first world title at the competition in France on 26 March 2022. Uno won with a total score of 312.48 to hold off compatriot Yuma Kagiyama, who took silver. Sakamoto won the women’s singles world title at the competition in France on 25 March 2022. Sakamoto finished with a total score of 236.09 and led throughout the competition after triumphing in the short program. Tennis Player Karthik Anand Preparing for Life After Sport with Academy Bachelor’s Program

Karthik Anand is well on his way to reaching his dream of playing tennis on the professional circuit and becoming a role model for aspiring young athletes from India. But when his playing days eventually end, Anand will be prepared for a career as a coach because of his education from the United States Sports Academy. A native of New Delhi, India, Anand is the Academy’s latest Student of the Month. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Sports Science degree in sports coaching while living and training at the Walter Grunfeld Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain. Academy Alumnus Dr. Alan Ledford Promoted to Associate Professor at Wilmington College

United States Sports Academy alumnus Dr. Alan Ledford earned a promotion to associate professor of sports management at Wilmington (Ohio) College. Ledford is also the sports management program director at Wilmington. He credited his Academy Doctor of Education degree in sports management (2016) with helping him land his job at Wilmington. He said the Academy’s flexible online learning option were beneficial to him as a student. “After completing my doctoral degree, I was able to interview and earn my current job at Wilmington College,” Ledford said. “The Academy is great place for a self-starter student. Academy President and Alumnus Dr. T.J. Rosandich Announces Plan to Retire in 2022

The United States Sports Academy has begun a search for a new president following an announcement made to the Academy’s Board of Trustees at the annual meeting that current President and CEO Dr. T.J. Rosandich plans to retire after nearly a half century of service to the institution. Rosandich has worked for the Academy since 1976, including service as its President and CEO since 2015. He will stay on board as President until his successor is hired and installed. The “Big Easy” is no stranger to hosting entertaining weekends. From adventures on Bourbon St. to stadium-filling concerts, New Orleans is always a good time. However, last week, the city also played host the NCAA Men’s Final Four, which featured a highly-anticipated matchup between the Duke and the University of North Carolina on one side of the bracket and Villanova and Kansas – the eventual tournament champion – on the other side.
