Academy President Discusses Sport Education Programs in Thailand, Philippines as Sports Study Tour Resumes this Summer

Amid the resumption of the United States Sports Academy’s longstanding Sports Study Tour and certification program with students in Thailand, Academy President and CEO Dr. T.J. Rosandich visited with education partners in that nation and in the Philippines. Thailand The Academy is scheduled to welcome a group of students from the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) to the United States in July 2022 for the resumption of the Sports Study Tour portion of the International Certification in Sports Management (ICSM) and International Certification in Sports Coaching (ICSC) programs. The Study Tour portion of the program had been put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions, but Thai students are scheduled to visit the World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Ala., sites in Atlanta, Ga., and the Academy campus in July. James Peterson Named Academy’s 2022 Sport Artist of the Year, Painter

Because of his colorful, contemporary style and dedication to personalizing paintings for athletes and inspirational entertainers, artist James Peterson has been named the United States Sports Academy’s Sport Artist of the Year in the Painter category. Peterson will be introduced to the public at the institution’s Awards of Sport program on its Daphne, Ala., campus on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Peterson is a contemporary portrait artist originally from Milwaukee, Wisc. His original 60×48 portrait of NBA Hall of Fame player Alex English is autographed by both the athlete and the artist. Peterson paints larger-than-life portraits of inspirational athletes and entertainers. As part of that series, Peterson created two unique portraits of each subject, gifting on to the athlete and keeping the other signed original, or in this case, donating it. [...]

Golfer Justin Thomas, Tennis Star Iga Swiatek Named Academy May Athletes of the Month

American golfer Justin Thomas and Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek impressed on the biggest stages in their sports in May and were named the United States Sports Academy’s Athletes of the Month. Thomas won his second PGA Championship with a playoff win against Will Zalatoris on 22 May 2022 in Tulsa, Okla. Thomas shot a 5-under par 275 to win his second major tournament. Swiatek won her 28th consecutive match and captured the women’s Italian Open title with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur on 15 May 2022. Swiatek has now won all four Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 tournaments she has played in this season and won her last five WTA tournaments overall. Brett Grill Selected as Academy’s 2022 Sport Artist of the Year, Sculptor

Because of his dedication to depicting some of sport and history’s greatest figures, sculptor J. Brett Grill has been selected as the United States Sports Academy’s Sport Artist of the Year, Sculptor. Grill will be introduced to the public during the Academy’s Awards of Sport program on its Daphne, Ala., campus on Thursday, November 10, 2022. Since 1984, the Academy’s Sport Artist of the Year Award has been given to an individual who captures the spirit and life of sport so that future generations can relive the drama of today’s competition. Academy Student Vicki Mengel Rising through Collegiate Softball Coaching Ranks

Vicki Mengel, a softball coach in Maryland, is quickly rising through the ranks in collegiate coaching. In five short years, Mengel has moved up from coaching at Havre de Grace High School to last year helping form and be the head softball coach for Cecil College. Now, Mengel earned her first Division 1 assignment as a volunteer assistant softball coach at Delaware State University. With one foot in the door, Mengel hopes that after she completes her Bachelor of Sports Science degree in sports coaching from the United States Sports Academy, she will be able to secure a Division 1 head coach position. Academy Faculty Teaching Sports Marketing Course to Students from Barcelona’s GBSB Global Business School

The United States Sports Academy is once again teaming up with GBSB Global Business School to provide an online, instructor facilitated sports marketing course to sports management students at the Barcelona-based institution. The 10-week post-secondary, non-degree sports marketing course is being taught by the Academy’s director of doctoral studies Dr. Fred Cromartie and chair of sports management Dr. Brandon Spradley. The course launched this month and covers sport marketing principles and the elements of the marketing mix. Topics include advertising, promotions, pricing, sponsorships, and market segmentation. Academy Expands Global Reach by Assisting in Planning of Soccer Academy in Cabo Verde

Collegiate Gymnastics Champions Paul Juda, Trinity Thomas Named Academy April Athletes of the Month

Paul Juda and Trinity Thomas won the men’s and women’s all-around titles at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships and were crowned the United States Sports Academy’s Athletes of the Month for April for their impressive feats. Juda, competing for the University of Michigan, won the men’s all-around title and tied Sam Mikulak’s modern-era school record of six All-America honors at the NCAA Gymnastics Championships in Oklahoma on 16 April 2022. In addition to the all-around title, Juda also scored 15.000 and won the vault title. Thomas, a University of Florida senior, held off Olympic all-around champion Sunisa Lee to win the women’s NCAA all-around title on 17 April 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas. Ciara Taylor Says Academy Education Opened Door for Opportunity in USFL Concussion Safety Role

Ciara Taylor is an athletic trainer at Oak Mountain High School in Birmingham, Ala., and a former United States Sports Academy Student of the Month. Now, she’s making the most of her opportunity to work as a concussion manager, spotter, and athletic trainer for the United States Football League (USFL) in Birmingham. Student of the Month Dr. Steve Wachs is a Teacher, Podcaster, Sport Psychologist and Social Media Researcher

Dr. Steve Wachs is already an accomplished teacher, podcaster, sports psychologist, and researcher, but now that he has a doctoral degree from the United States Sports Academy, the institution’s latest Student of the Month hopes to expand his reach with more speaking engagement and presentation opportunities. Wachs recently successfully defended his dissertation, which researched the impact of social media on young athletes. For the mentorship portion of his Academy doctoral program, Wachs started a podcast that revolves around basketball in the Southern California area and includes discussions of sport psychology, coaching, and parenting.
